Guys, here we go.

I have had approved the wording for my attempt at the GREATEST MAPPING CONTEST of all time. I have done my BEST !
I really hope you ALL take great advantage from this.

First have a little look at the company I am involved with here
Perception Pty Ltd (http://www.perception.com.au/)

NOW I am having trouble wording the contest description.
The objective is to allow people to make ANY file for UT2003.
We want to allow mappers, modellers, sound people, music people, texture people, scripters etc. ALL TO COMPETE.

So you CAN submit a complete map, with as much as you like.
You CAN just submit a sound package - but it must be in UT2003 format.
You CAN just submit an animated creature model.
You can script a useful UT2003 function or even a new editor button.
You CAN submit ANY file that would be useful to a company making a game based on the UT2003 engine.

AND it is up to Perception to judge the BEST !

HERE is the approved wording.
Please HELP ME make the words RIGHT!

************************************************** ************
"The UT2003 Perception Mapping Contest"

Prizes:
First $500 donated Perception, Trophy donated OzForces
Second $100 voucher donated Games Wizards (Campbelltown)
Third $50 donated OzForces

Objective (for contestants)
Submit a file or files for a UT2003 Map.
Files may be in
"ukx" - Animation format
"ut2" - Map format
"ogg" - Music format
"uax" - Sound format
"usx" - Static Mesh format
"utx" - Texture format
"u" - Script format
ANY combination of files is accceptable for judging ( a "ut2" file is NOT essential).

Staff of Perception Pty. Ltd. to judge the contest for BEST files submitted.

Judging Criteria:

The WINNER will be the person showing the most skill with the UT2003 editor and engine as judged by Perception Pty. Ltd.
Choice of Winners will be entirely at Perception's discretion and to their criteria for quality.

Prizes will be awarded regardless of any employment offered by Perception to entrants in the contest.

Perception Pty. Ltd. are looking for staff to assist in production of a Single Player squad-based First Person Shooter.
This game will be based around a license from a Major Film/Video studio and the Unreal Tournament 2003 engine.

Obviously, Perception will be using the contest to search for staff, but any employment by Perception will be agreed between the contestant and Perception, will not involve this contest in any way directly, and will be totally at the discretion of Perception Pty. Ltd.
Contestants are not in any way guaranteed a job but it's a great opportunity.

Contestants should not contact Perception Pty. Ltd. directly.

Yeti to handle all eMail regarding the contest.
Yeti will be happy to clarify the eligibility and aceptability of any entry.
Yeti to assist any entrant who is having trouble importing work into UT2003, etc.
Yeti will organise the contest and will not be competing.
Yeti as always will maximise exposure of both the Contest and Winners.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Contest CLOSES DEC 13th 2002 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

************************************************** ************

Suggestions for wording and otherwise ??

Then I will put up the html :D

Rather than calling it the 'Mapping' contest, call it an 'Editing' contest. Also, extend the deadline a little so I'll have a chance to get something in there ;p.

Yeti

Commercial reality - everything has to be done yesterday.

The contest provides a time period for people to create content to impress Perception. Not a long time but ...

Otherwise you could just submit a portfolio of work NOW - which is normal commercial practise. This gives you a few weeks to prepare something.

BEST OF LUCK !

"The UT2003 Perception Editing Contest"

"The UT2003 Perception UnrealEd Competition"

Funny thing is I sent Perception my portfolio about 4 days ago. They should be getting it in the mail anyday now. Talk about coincidence?

Yep! I'll be in there, as soon as I get my new video card tomorrow.
Haven't used or seen the UT editor yet, but hopefully I'll learn the editor and have a map to deliver by the 13th Dec.
I've got the map layout all in my head, hopefully i will be able to put it into the editor.
I want that $500.oo
Especially that trophy! :D
Hey Nexx hows that UT trophy look'in from that comp you beat me in???
I hope your enjoying it.
Your not going to get this one.
Any way good luck to all (and you too Nexx, you're a good mapper).
It's gonna be a tough one.

I have a question.. I am working on a map now but i don't think it will be done by the 13th
Is it worth entering in the map even if it's not 100% done and ready to be released on the net? it should be 90% done i hope by the 13th.

It's just i think a lot more work goes into makeing a fully playable map then it does to make a texture file or sound file or static mesh..

so what i want to know is can i enter what i have even it's not 100% done? I would include a readme saying all this of course.

slagg
20-11-02, 03:58pm
I'm in the same boat as your Gage.
It's going to be very hard to complete a map before the 13th Dec, and I'm not sure if it will be 100% finished.
If I do get it finished, it's gonna have a rushed look about it....:(
And I'm still trying to get a handle on the editor......

Yeti

Guys, I do agree that mapping in UT2k3 is slow. And Contests force unreasonable compromises to be made. But production schedules do that too. I suggest you make maps with a number of completed zones that show the skills you are most proud of. And where necessary leave the rest of the map very bare/sparse.

Likewise if you are a mapper you maybe could ignore an aspect of mapping like Gameplay - just put one playerstart in and put a note in the readme. If you are a texture artist or modeller - just make sure THEY see your BEST work - avoid anything else.

Perception is making a Game that includes DM-style multiplayer maps (probably TDM style) BUT it is a PRIMARILY Simgle Player Squad experience. So I personally would make bot-pathing the last priority - because Percepton's bots are quite different (with very different gameplay).

Ask more questions = get more answers. GOOD LUCK !!

Gage
20-11-02, 04:38pm
Well I do like making Single player maps more then multiplayer maps it's just UT2003 is a multiplayer game (hurry up Duke 4 or unreal 2 or dues ex 2)

That is why I guess I like making CTF maps because out of everything they have the biggest single player feel to them. 2 define bases different methods of attack. Where a DM map is just everyone shooting anything that moves and the map has to reflect that. Like what would CTF-face be as a DM map?

Anyway I am going to enter CTF-overkill2003 (or should I just call it CTF-overkill2?) to late to start anything else right now. It should be 90+% done might be missing weapons and bot paths but I don’t think that is a big issue. As long as the map is not made public I will be happy.

Just one more point remember if u where working for a game company u would work on a map 8+ hours a day because that is your job. Just remember the rest of us have a life out side of mapping. Mapping as a past time does not pay the bills (yet) and I am sure everyone would agree with this even Yeti. I can understand the reason behind the rush because if they where going to hire some of us then they would want as on the pay roll and working on the game ASAP..

I just am going to say Good luck to everyone who enters. There is some great talent in our part of the world. And it would be great to see an unreal engine (the best engine) game to come out of Australia.

Ahhh...no probs.
Another one under my belt.......

DM-LS_Moonlight_Sonata (http://www.unrealplayground.com/mapper.php?id=302)

I'd like to enter this map aswell.
Its probably my best work yet, and the song that goes with it rocks.
25+ custom static meshes in this one (in MyLevel)
about the same for the custom textures (in MyLevel)

Gained permission from Robin Alciatore (proffesional pianist) for the use of the song moonlight sonata by Beethoven.

Also has the new readme2003 format i designed...he he

Wow, great atmosphere definitely. Flowwise I found it a little too disjointed, but I'll have to play it a bit more to pinpoint it. I also felt the scale was too big. Some parts need to be scaled back a bit. But the mood and atmosphere was very good.

Also, do you ever make maps by request? ;)

Spargo_64
21-11-02, 05:27pm
Yeah, couple for my LAN mates for old UT (DM).
I've made one custom static mesh pack so far, and i've been asked to make another of assorted furniture which i'll do soon (if i can ever get a bloody day off work....grrrrrrr)

Yeti - I would like to enter my static mesh pack in the comp as well, its on my mappers page at UP.

A second pack will be available soon......

And another BR map VERY soon (probably today)

Hmm, ever thought of doing a city scape sort of map (buildings, rooftops etc)? I like the gloomy feel of moonlight, and wouldn't mind some of that in syndicate :).

Spargo_64
21-11-02, 09:00pm
Yeah, might make one soon, not like BR-Skyline though, a proper street level map, ghetto style, or like an escape from new york type map. With all the emitters you can put in these days, would be very easy to get some atmosphere going.

Spargo_64
21-11-02, 11:29pm
Just uploaded another BR map to UP.
Its a mini-me match in the bottom of a grave.

BR-LS_Shallow_Grave (http://www.unrealplayground.com/mapper.php?id=302)

I'd like to enter this one in the comp aswell, but its not all my own work. A woman in canada did all the bot pathing for me. We often make joint maps, i make the maps, she does the pathing.

she has "the gift"

I'm sure Perception will recognise talent when they see it. May be you should just make a small one on one map and focus on the quality. I'm making a indoor/outdoor 4 player DM myself.

On a side note to mappers, if find the easiest way to make a map for UT2003 is to define the BSP first. Rather than using mesh walk ways, for instance, use a simple bsp box as a place holder. Then start packing in the static meshs, and then after that, light your level. Finally bot path it.

I find if you modulise your map making into seperate components you can save a lot of rebuild time.

slagg
25-11-02, 12:38pm
I finds it's best to lay out the BSP shapes then put in the Static Meshes.
What happened to the "transparent" option for textures???
I needed some water, and I can't have a texture that's transparent so you can see through the water before entering:(

Gage
25-11-02, 03:31pm
use a fluid surface info use that for the top of water it's much better then just simple trasparent texture.. also u can have a lot of fun with the settings to get really cool effects

Yeti
25-11-02, 03:54pm
No-one noticed but entries can be from any mapper or combination (unrestricted)(so I a'int pimping internationally - keeping it local by default only)

Simeon Entires confirmed

BR-LS_Spookyville
DM-LS_Moonlight Sonata
DM-LS_Static_Pack

and Simeon and Louise Trepanier[CAN] Entries

BR- LS_Shallow_Grave
(she seemed to miss pathing the keg'o'health - ;-))

All maps downloaded and run OK.
:D

SLAGG - FINALBLEND IT !!!!!!!!!
Fluid-surface better for shallow water - as in all of UT2k3 (knee depth).
UT technique - sheet and watervolume is the Mobile Forces method and is better if swimming is involved IMHO.

Am i the only one in......?

Anyway, got another coming V soon. I've worked out how to export from Ued 2.0 and Ued 3.0. So a map i made ages ago (the counterstrike dust level conversion for UT) is being remade for UT2003.
The new editor can handle all the bits and peices i had to leave out of the original, well the original is the same as the CS version, but this one is MUCH bigger, with outside terrain.

And a drivable bulldog...he he

Gage
25-11-02, 04:30pm
a little tip i think it's better then enter 1 really good map then 3 or 4 maps i mean they might look at one map and it could not be a very good map (not saying your maps are not good but u know what i mean) and not get around to looking at the really good maps in the collections u have entered entered.

I will have a map ready for the 13th i rather put the whole time into 1 great map then 4 good maps....

Tanus
25-11-02, 04:30pm
I might get around submitting something codewise in nature, but it depends on how much time I want to spend on experimental code compared to functional code ;).

Spargo_64
25-11-02, 05:37pm
I think all my maps are really good, or i would not submit them.
I've had a lot of practice with Ued 2.0, so map making is coming easy with the new editor.

There will be 4 entered all up in the comp, and 2 static mesh packs, i don't see the problem with that.

Each map is different in theme, and shows diversity, where as one map shows you could be unreal (pun) at making say, industrial type maps, but suck at everything else.

Just my 2 cents........

It think you will find that mapping skills are relative no matter what kind of map you make. Someone who only make killer industrial maps is still probably better at making a gothic map, than someone who is not as good at making maps, but makes many different types of maps. Skills such as good lighting, scale and game flow can be transfered to any style of map.

Cliffyb is right about needing the "artists eye" to make maps. The ability to know what looks right. It's not something you can be taught, you have to learn it yourself. Not saying that I have it, but I'm sure as hell trying to learn :)

I'm in panic mode at the moment. So many things to do, not enough time to do them. I've got to make two dozen meshes in lightwave, half of which will need to be surface baked. The bsp of the map is pretty much finished but I still have to put in static meshes, then lighting and bot pathing. If I get all the architecture in by monday/tuesday I will be very happy.

Ben absolutely CAN NOT get involved LEGALLY in such speculation.

It certainly IS a quality license.
And it's not Harry Potter vs Frodo deathmatch or some other "Lords of Might and Magic" knockoff.

I think it CERTAINLY reasonable you all have a clear idea - given publishing limitations, NDAs etc. And a summary of what has been said gives
1 ... Science Fiction based
2 ... squad based
3 ... you shoot with guns and other upgrade weapons
4 ... sets include space ships and planets, asteroids etc.
5 ... Gene Rodenberry (sic) is NOT in the credits

It's NOT Farscape (license already wasted), Star Wars (ditto), A v P (not wasted), manga, anime, Terminator, Babylon 5, Enterprise, Voyager, DS9, etc, etc.

WOW it's so easy to guess.

SO HERE ENDS THE SPECULATION - THANK YOU !!

I will kinda delete any - particularly if ya get close. (I have NEVA used MY moderator powers BUT ...)
We DO NOT need to embarass Ben and Perception.

Best of LUCK with it.

OKies, accepted - mainly 'cause ya reminded me of Starship Troopers - wish it WAS number 2 - I really like that weird mix of left wing and right wing concepts if not fighter wing tactics.
Spins my political head as well as the HUD.
Heinlein.
You would be a brave lil developer to make games in the Heinlein world view.
Yeah lets do "Stranger ....." - yeah right.
OK I'm scared

If you want political/action movies watch Patlabor (particularly number 2). It's one of my favourite movies, but some people dislike it because it's slow.

Mecha and Politics, could there be a better combination :D

Ooooh Yeah, I love the Patlabor style - although i don't think the Japanese have such great social intellectual struggles. Korizumi style inertia seems more real.

And I reckon we could do some real nice emitters for Akira.

Boy is this OT - I might move this thread to genereal (surge of moderator frustration - I gotta moderate somethin' someday)
:D
